Horticulture is a fun and rewarding hobby with many benefits. Whether you choose to grow flowers, vegetables or ornamental plants, many find that nurturing and tending to a garden brings such a rewarding feeling and sense of accomplishment. Make garden tools do double duty as handy makeshift rulers. Tools with substantial handles, like rakes, hoes and large shovels are great for taking measurements. All you have to do is lay them on the floor then use a measuring tape to measure their length. Next, use a Sharpie to accurately label the distance between each one. Now, the next time you’re down in the garden, you’ll have a handy ruler without needing to look anywhere else.
Use climbers to cover walls and fences. Climbers have many different uses and spread quickly. They may also grow through tress and shrubs that are already grown, or you can train them to cover your arbor. A number of climbers need to be attached to a support, but others just take care of their own attachments via tendrils and stems that twine. Wisteria, jasmine, honeysuckle, clematis and some rose varieties are good choices for climbers.
Consider growing wheat grass or cat grass near the plants your cat enjoys eating. You could also place mothballs and citrus peels around your plants to keep your cat away.
When mowing your lawn do not cut it as short as possible. When the grass is a little longer, the roots will be stronger and the lawn becomes more resistant. If the grass is too short, it produces shallow roots and that leads to a lawn with brown spots and dried-out patches.
A good but unusual organic solution for weeding your plants is try “boiling” your weeds way. A pot of boiling hot water can be one of the most safe weed destroyers. Pour the boiling water directly onto the weeds, just make sure you do not damage the nearby plants. Boiling water can hurt the roots of weeds and can prevent them from growing.
Mint is a very tasty herb that has a tendency to run wild in the garden if not kept in check. Keep the growth under control by growing them in a large horticulture pot instead. You can bury the container so the top is flush with the ground if desired, but the container’s walls will prevent the roots from spreading so that the plant won’t take over your entire garden.
You should divide irises. You can create additional irises by splitting up irises that are growing into each other’s space. You can do this by simply picking up bulbous irises once the foliage has withered. As soon as you pick up the bulb, it’ll split into pieces. That’s okay – in fact, it’s desirable. You can replant the bulb pieces and next year you’ll have a healthy bed of new irises. You should divide rhizomes using a knife. You can trim new pieces away from the outside of the bulbs and then simply throw the old center away. Each piece must have a minimum of one strong offshoot. Plant immediately.
As was mentioned at the beginning of this article, horticulture may be an incredibly rewarding hobby. Whether you enjoy a vegetable or flower garden, the rewards are beneficial. Take your horticulture to greater heights of enjoyment with the tips you’ve gotten here.
