Learn some tips that can help you grow a much better garden for you, your family, or your business. Figure out what you need beforehand, so you don’t spend money on equipment that isn’t necessary, or impractical seeds for your climate.
Digging in hard clay soil is made even more difficult because it sticks to the shovel. Use a thin coat of floor or car wax on your shovel, then buff it with a nice clean cloth to make dealing with clay soil easier. The clay won’t stick to it, and the end will not rust as an added bonus.
Start your plants in containers before transferring them to the garden. This insures that the plants will grow and thrive into adulthood. This also helps tighten time between plantings. When you remove your mature plants, the next batch of seedlings should be ready.
Plant perennials that are resistant to slug and snail infestations. Snails and slugs can quickly wreak havoc on a garden. Snails and slugs have a good time destroying perennials that are young and have tender and smooth thin leaves. There are some perennials that do not appeal to slugs, such as those with leaves that are hairy and tough with a bad taste. Some varieties of these plants are campanula, helleborus, heuchera, or euphorbia.
All plants need an adequate supply of carbon dioxide in order to thrive. Plants will not thrive if they don’t have an adequate amount of CO2. The best way to get higher CO2 for your plants is to grow them in a greenhouse. In this environment, the CO2 levels are kept high so the plants can experience optimal growing conditions.
When the fall season arrives, it is time to plant your fall edibles. Instead of using regular clay pots this year for planting lettuce and kale, try a pumpkin container instead! When you have finished cutting and cleaning the pumpkin, spray it with some liquid that will stave off wilting to keep it from rotting. Now you can use the pumpkin as a planter.
Try growing wheat grass or cat grass in the area of the plants your cat wants to eat. You could also place something that will cause your cat to go away from your plants, such as citrus peels or mothballs.
If you have planted vegetables within your garden, make sure that they are getting at least six hours of sunlight each day. Proper sunlight is a prerequisite for proper growth. This is true of some flowers.
Boiling away unwanted weeds is an odd, but productive method used in many gardens. A boiling pot of water is one the best and safest herbicides you can find. Although this method is organic, it does pose a danger to your plants. The extreme heat of the water will cause damage to the weeds’ roots, which will stop them from growing any more.
You must do a bit of research, enjoy working outside a good deal of the time, and have lots of patience. Once you see the literal fruits of your labors, the time and effort you’ve invested will seem worthwhile.
