Holistic lifestyles are spreading and becoming popular, all while organic is growing in popularity as well. The tenets of holistic living require use of herbs and certain other plants, which need to be organic. See the piece that follows for several effective ideas for growing an organic garden.
Your children will enjoy the experience of working with you in the organic garden. Children will benefit from the fresh air while bonding with you in your efforts to provide healthier food alternatives for them.
Young children will love it if you plant strawberries that bear continually, and organic gardens are the perfect place to do it. Kids really enjoy plucking snacks directly from the ground, and may have greater enthusiasm for the work if they see the results of their labor right away.
If you have a high priority for sustainability in your organic gardening, try leaving a corner of the property undeveloped as a mini wildlife refuge. You will find that many of the supporting cast of insects and birds that aid in plant production and pollination will be present on your land and actually help your developed gardens to produce better.
If you are growing plants organically indoors, you have to consider the light that they are getting. If your dwelling does not enjoy a great deal of natural sunlight, it makes sense to grow only those varieties meant to thrive in such environments. Using UV lamps is a great way to grow an organic garden anywhere.
Perennial gardens should be prepared easily and quickly in the ground. Use your spade to slice chunks of turf up, then flip each piece over, and spread wood chips on top to a depth of four inches. Let this sit for a couple weeks, next dig into it to plant your new plants.
When a seed actually sprouts, it doesn’t need to be in as warm an environment. After growth begins, you can remove plants from any excessive heat sources. Also, remove plastic coverings from the tops of your growing containers to keep them from becoming too warm or humid. Keep an eye on your seeds so you will know when this should be done.
Tuck away some plastic grocery bags and use them to slip over your muddy boots. You will be able to go in and out without having to keep taking your shoes on and off.
One of the most important things to consider when plotting your garden is to make note of your available space. Do not underestimate the space that plants need to develop their root systems. Plants need room for physical growth and for the air to circulate within the soil. If necessary, use a ruler to measure the distance between each plant.
You need to avoid chores in your organic garden stacking up. Even if you can’t tend to your garden daily, you can do little things to help so that there is not a huge amount of work to be done when you are ready to get back to it. You can pull a few weeds when you take your dog outside.
Laundry Basket
When you want to harvest the produce in your organic garden, always have an old laundry basket to hand. This type of basket can double as a large colander for the fruits and vegetables you pick. After you have rinsed your produce in the laundry basket, the water will just drain right out the sides.
You can kill weeds naturally. Try using several newspaper layers to control weeds. Weeds need sun for growth, just like any other plant. When you place layers of newspapers on top of them, the weeds will suffocate from the lack of light. Newspapers tend to break down into compost nicely. Covering the newspaper with mulch will help your garden to be more pleasing to the eye.
The simple beer trap is still one of the best methods of ridding your organic garden of slugs. To create a beer trap, dig a hole in your garden that is the depth of a glass jar, leaving the mouth of the jar level with the soil. Fill the jar with beer about an inch lower than the top. Slugs will be attracted by the beer and fall into the jar.
